Burton Maus Obituary

Burton “Wade” Maus, age 82, was a man known for his big heart, generous spirit, and ability to build, fix, or figure out almost anything. In his own words, he was a “jack of all trades, master of none,” though those who knew him would likely disagree.

Wade is survived by his children: Jennifer and her spouse, Mark Greig, of Somerset, PA; Geraldine and Bob Penrod, and their extended family, of Boswell, PA; Garret Maus and Heidi Pristas Maus of Jennerstown, PA; and Justin Maus and Tabatha Snead Maus of Hollywood, MD.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sydney K. Greig and Mike Bowman of Springs, PA; Alex Greig of Somerset, PA; Jamie Nemchik of Donora, PA; Dana Ann Nemchik of Boswell, PA; Clayton Penrod of Latrobe, PA; Colt Diehl of Jennerstown, PA; and Jesse Snead of Hollywood, MD.

His great-grandchildren include Carter Hull, Ella Nemchik, Chase John, Colson Weimer, Broderick Greig, and Henley Bowman.

Wade was the oldest of four siblings. He is survived by his sister, Kim A. Peterson of Beaver Falls, PA. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Jan K. Maus of Youngstown, PA, who passed away in 2022, and by his brother, Gerald L. Maus, who passed away at only four years old. That early loss created a lifelong bond between Wade and Jan.

Most of his friends knew him as Wade. He held a long-standing position as a Station Engineer at the Jennerstown, PA, facility, a critical link in the Cold War-era microwave relay network. He later served as Head of Satellite Communications, running the Etam Earth Station until his retirement at the young age of 53.

Throughout his career with AT&T, Wade worked on many special projects, including the replacement of the trans-Atlantic cable with fiber optics in 1987 and early testing of cell phones during the era of Ma Bell and Bell Laboratories.

Beyond his career, the great loves of Wade’s life were his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends near and far. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, building creative things, and learning about almost anything that caught his interest. There truly was not much he could not do.

Wade’s generosity, intelligence, humor, and willingness to help others will be remembered by all who were blessed to know him.
