James Patrick Carney, 94, of Terra Alta, WV passed away Monday, June 17, 2024, at New Horizon Senior Living Center, Kingwood. He was born at his home in Hopemont, Terra Alta, WV, December 1, 1929, a son of late Mabel Eleanor (DeLauder) Carney and Mathias Joseph Carney from Dublin, Ireland, and his beloved stepfather Cecil Calhoun.
Jim graduated from Terra Alta High School, class of 1948. He joined the US Army in 1948, and served in the Korean War where he was wounded fighting on the front lines. He was awarded 3 bronze stars. He was an avid mountain man, he recalled that as a child he would start hunting in Bruceton Mills and hunt all the way home to Terra Alta. He enjoyed telling stories, to many who would listen, of hunting, fishing, farming, and the shenanigans of family and friends. Many of his stories were “toned down” depending on the company that was listening. All who knew Jim will remember him for his great sense of humor and as someone with a truly kind heart. His family can’t remember him ever turning away anyone who needed help. He looked forward to sharing his morning coffee with his friends at Groves’ Hardware. He worked for the Terra Alta Roads Department, he also worked on vehicles and was a handyman who could do just about anything. He retired from Columbia Gas Company, where he worked at the compressor station as a supervisor on the Aurora Pike, Terra Alta, WV. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, and a firefighter for the Terra Alta Volunteer Fire Department.
His wife Donna Mae (DeBerry) Carney preceded him in death March 13, 2021. They were united in marriage June 8, 1951. Their first child, a son, Larry James Carney, was born April 12, 1953. He and his wife Carol reside in Boise, ID. Their second child, a daughter, Linda Susan Carney, was born November 17, 1956. She resides in Terra Alta, WV, also surviving are two grandsons, Eliot Watson and wife Shannon, of Scott Depot, WV, and James William John, of Terra Alta, WV.
