John Wesley Herndon

John W. Herndon, age 87, of Tunnelton, WV, Denver community, passed away, Tuesday, January 03, 2023, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Tunnelton, August 17, 1935, a son of the late William R. Herndon and Georgia L. (Ruckle) Herndon. His wife, Phyllis A. (Matlick) Herndon survives. They were united in marriage July 21, 1957.

John was a heavy equipment operator in the coal mines. He was a US Army Veteran, and a member of the Denver United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, hunting and camping. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his wife he is survived by:  one son, Mark D. Herndon and wife Frances “Butch”; one daughter, Renee M. Wolfe, and husband Larry, all of Tunnelton; three grandchildren, Melissa Dawn Herndon, Matthew Dillon Herndon and Makayla Kelly, of Kingwood, and Tressa Ann Wolfe, all of Tunnelton; one great grandson, Liam Wesley Herndon.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 12 siblings, Willard Herndon in infancy, Ralph Clifton Herndon, Ethel Ruth Teter, Louella Mae Shahan, Rachel Cathryn Phillips, Virginia Gertrude Anderson, Genevieve Charlotte Phillips, Jacob Ross Herndon, Susan Margueitte Taylor, Walter Lee Herndon, Betty Lue Jean Brown, and John Wesley Herndon.

Friends may call at Kingwood Funeral Home, 295 S. Price Street, Kingwood on Thursday, January 5th from 3-7 pm and Friday, January 6th from 11 am until the funeral hour.  Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm, Friday, January 6, 2023, at the funeral home with Chaplin Wendy Browne officiating. Interment at Shay’s Chapel Cemetery. Full military graveside rites will be accorded by the honor details of VFWs of Preston County and the WVANG.
