Larry Darrell Johnson, 70, of Kingwood, WV, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 25, 1955 in Morgantown, son of the late Bobby Lee and Nancy Rebecca (Childers) Johnson.
Larry was a 1973 graduate of Tunnelton High School. He was proud to have lettered for four years in baseball and basketball, even pitching a no hitter in 9th grade and was a member of the 71-72 basketball team that went to the state tournament. After high school, Larry joined the US Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, TX, and Fort Meyers, VA, as a member of the Honor Guard. Following his service, he started a mining career at Preston Energy, and later Mettiki, as a mechanic and electrician. He ended his career at Alliance Coal as the Regional Longwall Coordinator.
Larry is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping at Smoke Hole. Family was most important to Larry. Larry was a loving husband, proud father and grandfather. His three grandsons were his pride and joy. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Larry is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Patricia (Schmidl) Johnson; one son, Christopher Johnson, of Kingwood; two daughters, Tai Johnson and husband Jake Dolence, of Farmville, VA, Larynn and husband Shawn Shaffer, of Terra Alta; three grandsons, Peyton and Carter Shaffer, Eli Johnson; five brothers, Gerald Johnson, of Tunnelton, his twin brother, Perry Johnson, of FL, David Johnson and wife Bonnie, of Tunnelton, Tony Johnson and wife Sherry, of Morgantown, Louis Johnson and wife Brenda, of Tunnelton.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Thomas, Phillip, Kenneth and Timothy Johnson; and one sister in law, Vicky Johnson.
Family and friends may be received at the Kingwood Funeral Home, 295 S. Price Street, Kingwood, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 3pm to 7pm. Full military honors will be conducted by the Preston County Honor Guard and the WVANG Honor Guard at 5pm and a Prayer Vigil will be held at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Monday, September 22, 2025 at 11am, with Father Dominic Athishu as Celebrant.
