Nan Brown Obituary

Nan G. Brown, 66, of Morgantown and formerly of Wheeling, WV, died peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at her home.

Nan was born on February 5, 1953, in Morgantown and was the daughter of the late Charles Horton Brown and Betty Lee (Gallaher) Brown.

Nan obtained her law degree from West Virginia University in May 1982. She also had a A.B. in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in History, both from West Virginia University. She practiced law for 33 years, all of which were in the Wheeling office of Legal Aid until her retirement in December 2015. Her cases included fair debt collections with student loans, federal cases on prison conditions, domestic violence, and her first love, fair housing law. Nan was inducted into the West Virginia Legal Aid Hall of Fame and was awarded the Atticus Finch Award by the Ohio County Bar Association for her years of public service. Nan loved Nascar, music, reading, and in her earlier years, skiing and hiking. She shared many of these loves with her cousin and best friends, Kim (Brown) Poland and Nancy (Taylor) Brugh. She was also supported throughout her career by her friend and co-worker, Robin Lucas.

She is survived by her sister and husband, Jana Brown and Harold Harsh, Jr., of Oakland, MD, and a niece and two nephews, Courtney Dawn and Charles Patrick Brown, and Harold (Hank) Harsh, III.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Brown, June 6, 2019, and Betty G. Brown, July 24, 2018; and her brother, Lewis Charles Brown, May 1, 2014. Per Nan’s request, there will be no service.

The family requests that any memorial donations be made to Legal Aid of West Virginia, 922 Quarrier Street, 4th Floor, Charleston, WV 25301.
