Phillip “Sam” Samuel Hardesty, 86, was carried away on the last train to glory, on Monday, April 3, 2023 from his home in Kingwood, West Virginia. He was born on November 4, 1936, in Rodemer, West Virginia, a son of the late Harry Roosevelt and Dollie Belle (Lemon) Hardesty.
Sam graduated from Terra Alta High School in 1953, and was a veteran in the U.S. Army. He was a railroad operator for B&O and later CSX Railroad and retired in 1988 after 32 years of service. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. Sam’s other great joy in life was spending time working on his farm.
Sam is survived by his son, Edward Lee Hardesty and spouse Monzelia of Lewis Center, OH; and a grandson, Jackson Hardesty and fiancé Gerrilyn Shively of Columbus, OH.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Gaynelle (White) Hardesty in 2020, and his brothers; William Paul Hardesty, and Harry Robert Hardesty.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 17936 Veterans Memorial Highway in Kingwood on Friday, April 7, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Arrangements under the direction of Kingwood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made in Sam’s honor to the Preston County Humane Society, P.O. Box 395, Kingwood, WV 26537.
