Shirley Pauline (Matthews) Metheny

Shirley P. Metheny, 69, of Bruceton Mills, WV (Hazelton community) died on June 22, 2026, at her home from cancer, just two days after her mother died. She was born on April 12, 1957, in Confluence, PA, the youngest daughter of the late Paul Matthews and Christine Wilhelm Matthews of Hazelton, WV. She faced her diagnosis with amazing courage and strength.

Shirley attended Bruceton High School. Quitting school at 16 to get married, she went on to get her GED and several certifications while being a working wife and mother. Initially, after marrying, she worked on a dairy farm and at Flushing Shirt Factory. After her family moved to South Carolina, she worked at a plastics manufacturing company. Upon returning to West Virginia, she worked at Closet Maid Cabinet Manufacturing until she retired about 5 years ago. She was a hard worker, compassionate, generous, a faithful friend, and a loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother.

Most recently, she attended Rush Baptist Church and for decades participated in the Serving Jesus Bible study group.

After retiring, Shirley became a full-time caregiver in her home for her sister, Margie, after Margie’s stroke and later for her mother, Christine, after she became wheelchair bound.

In her younger days, she loved to ride her motorcycle and was known to take part in a drag race or two. Now she loved her family and pets; Bandit, Freddie, and Meow Meow.

She is survived by two sisters and one brother; Loretta (Floyd) Hoover and Margie Hoover of Friendsville, MD, and Larry Joe (Carolyn) of Bruceton, WV (Hazelton). She is also survived by one son, Tobby Metheny, of Bruceton; two granddaughters, Sarah Metheny, of Bruceton and Katie Metheny of Pittsburgh, PA; and one grandson, Matthew (Brooke) of Ohio.

The family wishes to extend a hearty thank you to all the hospice workers at Amedisys for being so kind, professional, and helpful to Shirley and the family during this time.  They were truly awesome.

Cremation services will be accorded by Kingwood Funeral Home and Crematory, 295 S. Price St., Kingwood. Private burial will be at Shady Grove Cemetery in Bruceton beside her parents at a later date.
