Tami Sue Johnston, 64, of Kingwood, West Virginia, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital after a short illness
Born on March 14, 1961, in East Liverpool, Ohio, Tami was the beloved daughter of Sandra June (Marshall) Gray of Kingwood and the late John Patrick Johnston. Tami's life was defined by her unwavering dedication to both her family and her community.
A proud graduate of Oak Glen High School in New Cumberland, WV (Class of 1979), Tami went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in Consumer Sciences/Home Economics Teacher Education in 1983 and a Master of Science in Education in 1997, both from West Virginia University.
For more than 40 years, Tami passionately served the students of Preston County Schools, starting in Bruceton, Terra Alta, and Aurora, before settling in at Preston High School. There, she taught Food Service/Culinary Arts, where her students lovingly knew her as "Ms. J." She had a gift for nurturing the next generation, instilling in them a love for food and service. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, having also spent over two decades as a suite attendant at the WVU Football Stadium, where her friendly spirit and kindness were well-known.
Tami’s love of cooking was only surpassed by her love of family. She enjoyed creating meals for those she cared about and cherished every moment spent in the kitchen. A daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, Tami’s heart was as warm as the meals she prepared, and her presence will be deeply missed.
In addition to her mother, Tami is survived by her three sisters: Jodi Kronstain (Jerry) of Ohio, Brandy Gray of Kingwood, and Kate Gray of Chester; as well as many nieces and nephews who adored her.
Tami was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Gray; and her grandparents, Alvin and Dorcas Johnston, and Louis and Alma Marshall.
A Celebration of Tami’s Life will be held at a later date. Her family invites you to share condolences online at www.kingwoodfuneralhomewv.com.
Kingwood Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to assist the Johnston family during this difficult time.
