Theodore “Ted” Sprangel Jr. Obituary

Theodore “Ted” Anthony Sprangel Jr., 85, of Terra Alta, WV, passed away at home on January 22nd, 2019. Born on May 3rd, 1933, in Jackson, MI, he was the son of the late Theodore Anthony and Mary Flavia (Maes) Sprangel. Ted is a 1952 graduate of Addison High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree (1960) and a master’s degree in agriculture (1965) from Michigan State University. Ted was an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and played on the Air Force softball team. He taught at Litchfield High School in Litchfield, MI, for several years and then moved to upstate NY. He was the Chenango County 4-H Cooperative Extension Agent for 17 years in Norwich, NY. He then became the Cooperative Extension Agent for Allegany and Garrett Counties in MD. He retired in 1998 from the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service. As a member of St. Edward, the Confessor Catholic Church in Terra Alta, WV, he was active in the Catholic Church Summer Home Repair Program, helping many neighbors in Preston County, WV. Ted was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and belonged to the Appalachian Beekeepers Association. He loved to travel; he especially enjoyed his annual pilgrimage westward to hunt and his trips to NY to fish. He also enjoyed gardening, cutting wood, and bird watching. He was a very proud father and grandfather and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his former wife Joan F. (Robertson) Sprangel of Westbury, NY; and his four children Christopher Sprangel and his wife Libbie Mansell of Sudbury, MA; Bruce Sprangel and his wife Denise of Wittman, AZ; Beth Sprangel of San Antonio, TX; and Russell Sprangel and his wife Lisa of Westminster, MD; three grandchildren Brandon, Ryan, and Kelly; one great-grandchild Braydon; three sisters Betty Nieswender, Carol Stoll, and Cheryl Sprangel; and a multitude of close friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife Irmgard Koscielniak; his brother Joe Sprangel; and his sister Mary Jane Woerner. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Edward’s in Terra Alta, on Saturday March 16th at 11 am. Ted will be laid to rest at the Aurora Community Cemetery in Aurora, WV.
